Six Fall Sport Athletes Receive All-DIII Independents Honors
OVERLAND PARK, Kansas-- North Central University enjoyed one of its most successful fall sports season in school history. That success has been marked with multiple individual post-season honors including six athletes being named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Independent Teams in three different sports.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Junior outside hitter Mariah Simonson (Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa) was named to the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) All-Independent First Team after a year where she led NCU in nearly every offensive and defensive category and was top five in kills and blocks among all AD3I players.
Freshman setter Alyssa Wallace (Mora, Minn./Mora) was named to the AD3I 2nd team after leading NCU in assists despite missing a third of the season with injury. She was third in AD3I in assists as well.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Sophomore forward Alyssa Slone (Elyria, Ohio/Open Door Christian) and junior forward Christina Goodman (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) were each named to to the AD3I 2nd team. Goodman led NCU with eight goals and four assists while Slone tallied 8 times and assisted on two others.
MEN'S SOCCER
North Central Men's Soccer enjoyed an NCCAA DII Region championship season and two of its players were named to the AD3I honorable mention team. Senior forward Caleb Thomas (Wayland Mich./Black Forest Academy) and freshman forward Christian Stepaniak (Woodbury, Minn./Maranatha Academy) were each recognized for their outstanding 2011 seasons. Thomas led NCU with 10 goals while Stepaniak led NCU with 6 assists.
The Association of Division III Independents consists of 11 Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year.
