DULUTH, Minn. - North Central University softball (7-19, 1-9 UMAC) traveled north for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) doubleheader with The College of St. Scholastica Saints (10-9, 4-0 UMAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Saints pitching outlasted North Central and coupled with a strong defensive effort the Saints swept the Rams at home 12-0 and 9-1 both in five innings. St. Scholastica outhit the Rams 17-6 while the Rams committed more errors, 8-1.
Game 1: St. Scholastica got their bats going early with 10 runs after the second inning. North Central kept aggresive at the plate looking for hits but either hit right at the Saints fielder for the out or struck out swinging. In the top of the fourth inning, Amanda Roth (Appleton, Wis./Neenah) hit a double (ground-rule) for North Central's first hit of the game and to spark the Rams offense, but the Saints retired the Rams batters in quick fashion following Roth's double. Scholastica grabbed thw win, 12-0.
Game 2: The Rams had more success hitting off Scholastica's Audi Blonk earning five hits in the second game only one less than the Saints for game two. North Central's hits came earlier in game two when Roth singled to center field in the first inning. However, Scholastica started game two in similar fashion getting on the board quickly for the early lead. In the third, Stephanie Caravalho (Santa Clara, Calif./West Valley Community College) singled through the left side but two hits right to the Saints fielders ended the inning. In the fifth inning the Rams saw an offensive spark when Emma Bushey (Three Lakes, Wis./Three Lakes) hit a single through to the left side followed immediately by a hit to right field from Kylee Bommersbach (Sartell, Minn./Sartell). Caravahlo followed up with her second hit of the game in her second straight appearance at the plate to advance Bommersbach and send Bushey home for the score. Unfortnately, the Rams comeback was too late as the Saints took game two 9-1.
Up Next: North Central will be back in action this Saturday against The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets for a UMAC doubleheader. The games have been moved to The University of Northwestern-St. Paul's campus with a 6 p.m. start time.
