BUFFALO LAKE, Minn.-- Men's golf was in action over the weekend in their final competition before the three-day conference championship next weekend. They traveled to a pair of courses to play one full round each day in the Viking Invitational hosted by Bethany Lutheran College.
Friday the teams played at Crow River Golf Course (Hutchinson, Minn.) and the Rams stood tied for seventh out of nine full teams. Freshman Noah Gross (Loganville, Ga./Archer) was the Rams top player on the opening day, shooting an 83, to equal his best number of the season and tied him for 12th on the individual leaderboard. Junior Justin Johnson (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) was four strokes back in 87t and tied for 24th. The Rams shot a team score of 347 on the day which would tie them for seventh.
On day two, the teams traveled to Oakdale Golf Club (Buffalo Lake, Minn.) for the final 18 holes. North Central struggled on the second day but managed to hold on to eighth place despite shooting the highest score on the day. Justin Johnson was the top Ram on Saturday with an 89. D.J. O'Brien (Scandia, Minn./Chisago Lakes) was next with a 91 on day two while Noah Gross fell back to the third spot for NCU with a 93.
Overall, for the tournament, Johnson and Gross finished tied for the Rams top spot at +33 (176) and in 33rd place. Grant Dodds (Woodbury, Minn./New Life Academy) was one stroke back at +34 in 35th place with D.J. O'Brien tied in 36th at +36.
North Central is now in preparation for the 2017 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Championship that begins on Thursday. All nine teams will play 54 holes over three days at Alexandria Golf Club (Alexandria, Minn.). Each day's round is scheduled for a 10 a.m. tee time.
