North Central swept by Scots at the Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.-- North Central University Baseball is still looking for their first win of 2013 after being swept by Macalester College at the HHH Metrodome on Monday night. The Scots jumped on the Rams early and often in game one for a 13-1 win. Game two saw NCU rally back to tie Macalester after 4.5 innings only to give up a big inning en route to a 15-5 loss.

North Central (0-7, 0-0) fell behind 9-0 over the first three innings of game one before holding the Scots (3-4) off the board in the fourth and fifth. However, NCU could not get their own bats going and still trailed 9-0 after five full innings. Macalester plated four more in their part of the sixth before NCU was able to get their lone run of the game in the bottom of the inning to reach the final score of 13-1.

The Rams only scoring rally of game one began with senior Ben Freitag (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North) leading off with a single to center field and then stealing second base. After a Rams strikeout sophomore Gary Ramos (Chicago, Ill./Foreman) grounded into a fielders choice that moved Freitag to third. Senior Ian Andrews (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) then drove in Freitag with a double to center field.

Game two began with more promise for North Central as they got on the board in the top of the first inning before giving up two runs in the bottom of both the first and second innings to trail 2-1 after two full innings. NCU managed to get a run back in the top of the third with a single but the Scots would lead 4-2 after four full innings.

NCU came up with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 4-4 but the Scots threw up an eight spot in the bottom of the fifth to blow the game open. Macalester would add three more in the bottom of the sixth with NCU rallying to get a single run back in the top of the seventh but that would not be enough in the Scots 15-5 win.

Ben Freitag led off the game with a single to center and advanced to second on an error. Gary Ramos then reached on an infield single that moved Freitag to third. Then after a swinging third strike on Ian Andrews, Gary Ramos stole second and the Scots catcher made a throwing error that allowed Freitag to score from third and moved Ramos up an extra base.

The Rams scoring in the third also began with Ben Freitag singling to lead off the inning. Freitag would then move up to second on a wild pitch. Later, Ian Andrews then smacked a two-out double to center that scored Freitag.

North Central's fifth inning, game tying-rally began when sophomore Terrell Pollard (Wausau, Wis./Wausau East) and Ben Freitag each reached base on consecutive hit-by-pitches. A one-out, wild pitch then moved both runners up one base with Gary Ramos at the plate. Ramos came up with a big RBI triple that scored both runners to tie the game at 4-4.

NCU got a final run in the seventh when Terrell Pollard led off with a walk and Freitag was hit by a pitch for the second straight plate appearance. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Gary Ramos then grounded into a fielders choice that scored Pollard.

North Central was scheduled to be back in action on Friday and Saturday versus Finlandia University (Hancock, Mich.) in their home openers. Both weekend double-headers have been cancelled because the fields will not be ready for game action due to remaining snow.

The Rams will be back in action on March 26 when they close out their 2013 slate of games at HHH Metrodome. NCU will take on Bethel University (Arden Hills, Minn.) at 4:30 p.m. in a non-conference Division III double-header.
